My worklife in the USA

Choose a job you love and you will never have to work a day in your life.

                                                                                                      (Confucius)

I’ve come across this quote quite recently. I saw it in one of the classrooms at my university. At first I thought that it was so obvious that it was nothing more than a cliche. But with the passage of time and my graduation pending, I was starting to give it more and more thought. Of course my conclusions were not particularly optimistic and the mere thought of finding a permanent job in the forseeable future didn’t put me in a cheerful mood at all. It was one of the reasons why I came here. I wanted to put serious decisions off. I didn’t want to enter adult life just right after my studies without having any broader perspective on life. Without gaining some unforgettable experiences and collecting lasting memories. Participating in a work and travel programme seemed a great opportunity in this respect.

And I’ve just realised that it was the best decision I’ve ever made. After two months here I came to the conclusion that the quote above was more than just trite words. I realised that it was not actually such an unrealistic idea as I thought before. Being absolutely honest with you, I don’t feel that I have to work here. I don’t treat my job as an obligation but as an opportunity. And it’s not because of the fact that I have a dream job. Let’s face it, I don’t. I just work in a t-shirt shop. It can’t be compared to working as a caretaker of one of the Great Barrier Reef islands, sipping drinks and being paid exorbitant amounts of money. Although being a sales associate is not particularly a paradise job, I love it. And now I can understand what the quote really meant. It’s not just about the type of the job. It’s also about the place where you work and about the people with whom you work.

Just look at the photo. I took it while I was walking to work. I usually take the shuttle and it takes me about 10 minutes to get to my workplace but from time to time I like to take a walk. Although it’s not very close from the place I live (I need at least one hour to get there on foot), I think it’s worth the effort since the landscape is breath-taking. I think the phote speaks for itself and it doesn’t need any wordy explanation.

What is more, the people whom I meet on my way are absolutely incredible. They always put me in a wonderful mood just because I can see how they make the most of their lives, how they relish the scenery, how amicable they are. When we pass each other on the trail, we always greet each other, reciprocate smiles, sometimes start a little chat. It all gives me such a boost of positive energy. It always reminds me that I can derive true happiness from the intangibles. And it makes me realise that wealth management is not always about spending money. It’s about spending our time. Hiking to work is surely the best way how I could spend my time.

Finally, I love my job thanks to the people I work with. I didn’t expect that they would make me feel so welcome here or they would be always willing to give me a helping hand. Thank you Linda, Maria, Liz, Generose, Jason and Tomek. If it weren’t for you, it wouldn’t be so great to work here J

In today’s blogpost, I decided not to bore you with the details concerning my job, but if you want to hear something more about my workplace, go ahead and watch my video J
