That's right! I'D LOVE TO MAKE AN IMPACT. And I'm pretty sure that if I put the above qualities into practice, I can make a difference...to the environment, to animals, to the elderly, to the sick (to the healthy as well - I can always make them smile:) It doesn't matter to me how I will be able to contribute to my host community. I can do everything that is necessary, everything that can improve someone's life, or everything that will make someone happy.
Maybe, somebody may wonder why I have to travel to another continent to make a difference. It's not like I don't try to make a difference in my community. I do! I try to do it on a daily basis, wherever any opportunity arises. But I don't seek plaudits, I don't do it just to brag about it. When I feed birds in the wintertime I don't think about taking photos, I think about them being fed (so forgive me, I can't document it and upload any photo). When I help my neighbour to fetch her shopping, I don't concentrate on the camera but on the old lady who needs help. When I teach pupils who need some extra work with English, I focus on them, not on taking pictures. Therefore, I've found it so difficult to document my voluntary work.
But I think that the most tangible evidence that proves that I love helping others is my dog. She was found by my neighbours when she was just a puppy and they were about to bring her to an animal shelter. My parents and I decided to take her in. And it was the most rewarding decision ever.
I must say that I'm a great animal lover and I try to help those poor creatures whenever I can. Apart from feeding birds and stray dogs, I also engaged in a charity collection of food for dogs in a nearby animal shelter that was organised in my school. We also collected money by selling cakes, which we had earlier baked.
Recently, I've also contributed to the translation of the website of the Polish Theatre in Poznań. I translated the website with a few university friends as part of a voluntary project. It was an extremely challenging task as we had to translate all the descriptions of the plays and their reviews.
When it comes to an impact I will make in my host community in the United States, I don't worry about it because I'm full of ideas and I'm so eager to help!
